USG outlines election timeline, approves budget and introduces “satellite office hours”

The Undergraduate Student Government announced that the 2024 general council voting dates are Sept. 24 and 25 on TommieLink. The general council also approved the fall 2024 budget and discussed its new “satellite office hours” at a meeting Thursday.

Fall Elections

This fall, positions are open on both the executive board and general council. The duties of the vice president of financial affairs will fall on Margaret Cahill, director of campus life and USG adviser, until the position is filled.

Schoolwide voting begins at 8 a.m. on Sept. 24 and ends at 8 p.m. on Sept. 25. To be eligible to run for an executive board position, candidates must receive 50 signatures.

The open positions on the general council are:

  • Vice president of administrative affairs
  • Vice president of financial affairs
  • First-year engagement senator
  • First-year policy senator
  • Second-year engagement senator
  • Second-year policy senator
  • Junior engagement senator
  • Senior policy senator
  • Commuter senator
  • Underclassman residential senator
  • Neighborhood senator
  • Greater Minnesota senator
  • Out-of-state senator

Fall 2024 Budget

The general council approved the 2024 budget, which includes funding for clubs, campus-wide events and more.

“We are anticipating to receive about $100,000,” USG president, Jake Manske said, regarding the budget. “That is what we received last year, and it has remained pretty consistent since.”

USG also had $187,885 carryover from spring 2024, some of which the board allocated to the fall 2024 budget.

$60,000 of the fall budget will go toward clubs on a per-member basis.

The general council voted that the per-member allocation rate for club funding will be $50. This will not be the case, however, if a club is new.

“If it is a brand new club, USG has a number amount that they will give that club to get started,” Cahill said.

Satellite Office Hours

To keep the student body connected to student government and involved in decision making, USG has implemented “satellite office hours” this semester.

Every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in ASC 237, the USG executive board welcomes students to stop by to chat and meet everyone. The goal with these office hours is to increase USG visibility and student engagement.

The next general USG meeting will be at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26 at the Anderson Student Center in the Iverson Hearth Room.
