Coach Glenn Caruso told The Crest on Thursday that he’s expecting senior quarterback Amari Powell to start Saturday’s game against Valparaiso.
“Amari is a guy who battled hard and lost a position battle early in the year … All he did since then is work his butt off to prepare him for when his time comes,” Caruso said. “(Amari) is awesome.”
Powell has been with the Tommies since 2022. His best year came in 2023, when Powell threw for 786 yards and six touchdowns. On Saturday, Powell threw for 148 yards and connected for an 85-yard touchdown after relieving graduate quarterback Andy Peters.
Peters is not expected to suit up after he took a hit from Davidson junior safety Hayden Bender. After halftime, Peters was in street clothes and moving around the bench. He completed 10-of-13 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. Peters also rushed for 15 yards.
Peters is in his first year with the Tommies and won the starting job right after fall camp. Peters is second in the Pioneer Football League with 1437 total yards. He’s also scored 14 touchdowns.
St. Thomas dominated Davidson 57-13 en route to win their first conference game of the season. Tommie running backs combined for six scores.
