The St. Thomas Swimming and Diving team competed in the first two days of the Summit League Championships Wednesday and Thursday at the University of Iowa.
The women’s team broke school records in the 800- and 200-meter freestyle relays. Sophomore Sophia Hayes went from the 800 relay on Wednesday to finishing with a new program record in the 500 freestyle the next day at 4:58:07 — making her the second swimmer in program history to break five minutes in the event.
The men likewise broke the program record in the 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:21:27 to secure them a fourth place finish, but otherwise struggled to place inside the top 10 in the early events.
Competition will continue Friday and Saturday.
The St. Thomas women’s basketball team lost its three-game winning streak to the Kansas City Roos Thursday at Kansas City.
The loss puts St. Thomas at 7-6 in the Summit League and 15-11 overall.
