One person was injured in a multi-vehicle crash involving federal agents in St. Paul’s Cathedral Hill neighborhood Wednesday, according to St. Paul police.
Federal agents were pursuing a person in a vehicle when the fleeing vehicle crashed around 9:39 a.m., according to a press release from SPPD. The person who was being pursued sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Following the incident, a crowd formed on the corner of Western and Selby avenues.
The incident took place a little over four miles east of the University of St. Thomas’ St. Paul campus, three blocks west from the Cathedral of St. Paul.
Ray Camper, a resident who lives in an apartment near where the incident occurred, witnessed the crash and recorded the aftermath.
“I videoed what I could … I thought I saw an ICE agent approaching me, or what looked like an ICE agent,” Camper said. “I was concerned.”
Protests in and around the Twin Cities have increased in response to the homicides of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, Minnesotans who were shot and killed by immigration agents. St. Paul Police are writing a report on the crash.
St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her responded to the incident in St. Paul in a statement Wednesday afternoon, writing, “The incident today at Selby and Western underscores the fact that ICE is present, causing chaos and putting residents at risk in Saint Paul.”
“This is just another incident that tells us loud and clear: Operation Metro Surge needs to end immediately,” Her wrote.
