The Israeli military said Tuesday it killed a senior Hezbollah commander in a strike on Beirut while the militant group’s acting leader promised more fighting against Israeli troops in southern Lebanon and rocket fire into Israel.
The military said the strike killed Suhail Husseini, who it said was responsible for overseeing logistics, budget and management of the group. There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah.
Not even two weeks after Hurricane Helene swamped the Florida coastline, Milton strengthened into a major hurricane that is headed toward the state.
The system is threatening the densely populated Tampa metro area — which has a population of more than 3.3 million people — and is menacing the same stretch of coastline that was battered by Helene.
Traffic was thick on Interstate 75 heading north on Tuesday as evacuees fled in advance of Milton. Crews were also hurrying to clear debris left by Helene.
A park ranger died while trying to save three people during a water rescue at a national park in Minnesota.
The National Park Service said the ranger responded Sunday to a call for assistance on Namakan Lake in Voyageurs National Park near the Canadian border. Officials said their boat had become disabled during high winds and rough waters.
The ranger arrived and was towing the distressed boat to safety when the National Park Service boat capsized, sending all four people into the water.
The three people being rescued were able to swim to safety. The ranger’s body was recovered about three hours later. The name of the ranger has not been released.
The park service said an investigation is ongoing.
