Hurricane Melissa was set to pummel Jamaica on Tuesday as a catastrophic category 5 storm, the strongest to lash the island since recordkeeping began 174 years ago.

“There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a category five,” Prime Minister Andrew Holness said. “The question now is the speed of recovery. That’s the challenge.”

The storm is expected to make landfall on Tuesday and slice diagonally across the island. Shortly after, it is expected to hit Cuba.

A delegation of French senators visited The Louvre on Tuesday and acknowledged that the museum’s security was “not in line” with modern standards

The senators called for a speedy start of massive security renovation work that was already planned — as soon as possible, since France’s budget for 2026 is currently being debated in the parliament.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the U.S. Military carried out three strikes Monday in the waters of the Eastern Pacific against boats suspected of carrying drugs, killing 14 and leaving one survivor.

The death toll from the 13 disclosed strikes since early September is now at least 57 people.
