A U.S. submarine has sunk an Iranian warship in international waters, escalating the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran.

Officials say a torpedo fired from the submarine struck the Iranian vessel IRIS Dena off the coast of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s navy says it recovered 87 bodies and rescued 32 people from the water.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the ship as the Islamic Republic’s “prize ship.” The attack marks one of the rare times a submarine has sunk a ship since World War Two.

The strike comes as fighting across the Middle East continues to expand. Israel has targeted Iranian positions and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon, while Iran has launched attacks toward Bahrain, Kuwait and Israel.

A new report in Rhode Island says Catholic priests abused hundreds of children over decades while church leaders worked to conceal the crimes.

The investigation into the Catholic Diocese of Providence was led by Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha and released Wednesday.

According to the report, bishops often prioritized minimizing scandal and kept a secret archive that hid evidence of abuse and prevented victims from being identified.

Neronha says the report is meant to spark what he calls a “full reckoning” of the abuse.

Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor was just days away from returning home to her husband and two children when a drone strike at a command center in Kuwait killed her and five other U.S. service members.

“She was almost home,” her husband, Joey Amor, said from their home in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, on Tuesday. “You don’t go to Kuwait thinking something’s going to happen, and for her to be one of the first – it hurts.”

Amor was one of four U.S. soldiers killed in the Iran war on Sunday and identified Tuesday by the Pentagon; two soldiers haven’t yet been publicly identified. The members of the Army Reserve worked in logistics and kept troops supplied with food and equipment.

They died just one day after the U.S. and Israel launched its military campaign against Iran. Iran responded by launching missiles and drones against Israel and several Gulf Arab states that host U.S. armed forces.
