A 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar and Thailand last Friday, leaving over 1,700 dead and 300 missing. This crisis is expected to increase the food shortages, mass displacement and civil war already occurring in Myanmar. Aid agencies say their teams on the ground still don’t have a true picture of the devastation.
The U.S. stock market fell on Monday in preparation for President Donald Trump’s “liberation day.” The drop followed a sell-off that spanned the world as worries build that tariffs coming Wednesday from Trump will worsen inflation and limit growth for economies. Trump says he’s plowing ahead in part because he wants more manufacturing jobs back in the United States.
A University of Minnesota international student was detained by U.S. immigration authorities on Thursday, school leaders said in a statement this week. They described the situation as “deeply concerning.”
Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained the graduate student at an off-campus residence. University officials said the school is providing the student with legal aid and other support services. Leaders said school officials did not share information with federal authorities and were not given advance notice about the detention.
