First-year Survival Guide: Best student discounts

(Eli Bieker/The Crest)

Student discounts are a major perk of being a college student but can oftentimes be hidden at the bottom of websites and in terms and agreements. Here’s a guide to getting the most out of these perks.

Spotify

This may be obvious, but you can get Spotify Premium and Hulu with an active student ID for $5.99 a month. That’s $5 less than the normal individual premium plan — cash in while you can.

XFINITY On Demand

St. Thomas provides students connected to campus Wi-Fi with XFINITY On Campus, which gives you access to live cable television.

Orpheum Theater

Student discount rush tickets are available at some shows at the Orpheum Theater, the Minneapolis theater that Broadway tours frequent. Head to the box office early to get a rush ticket and show your student ID to lower the ticket price, which makes it a steal when compared with the rates Ticketmaster charges for regular tickets.

MSP Film Society

Looking for your independent film fix? Student discounts are available at The Main Cinema for $8 by showing your student ID at the box office.

Amazon

Amazon offers a six-month free Amazon Prime membership to students and a discounted rate after that. This is especially useful for buying textbooks, which you can often get used for a discounted rate. It also includes a Prime Video membership.

The New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal

St. Thomas libraries offers students a free account on the online versions of these three newspapers. Also, check out ProQuest U.S. Newsstream, which gives you access to online regional newspapers for free, including the Star Tribune.

The bottom line

This only scratches the surface of the many discounts available to college students. Do some of your own digging into different discounts that might apply for your personal use.
