General Policy
To be accepted, advertising must meet the standards of Student Media and the University of St. Thomas regarding Catholic teaching, truth and good taste. The Lead Adviser has discretion to accept or refuse any advertising on any medium within UST student media. Student Media standards comprise the following:
- Advertising should be truthful and not deceptive, exaggerated or misleading.
- Advertising should respect the human dignity of our audience.
- Advertising should be socially responsible and not promote wasteful consumption or lifestyles that oppose authentic human development.
About Alcohol and Other Substances
What The University Says
A. No liquor or beer logos, advertisements or advertisements from businesses where the sale of alcohol is a primary purpose of the business may appear in publications, which are funded by the university or sponsored by a university department or organization.
B. No posters or flyers may advertise to University of St. Thomas students the availability of alcohol at on- or off-campus events.
UST STudent Media Drug and Alcohol Advertising Policies (updated October 20, 2021)
- UST student media does not accept advertising that promotes non-FDA approved medications or drugs.
- UST student media does not accept advertising from cannabis or CBD retailers.
- No liquor, wine, or beer logos may appear in advertisements. Establishment logos are fine.
- If selling alcohol is the primary purpose of the business, we cannot accept advertising from that business (e.g. liquor stores, bars without food).
- If the business sells food and/or other products in addition to alcohol, we can accept advertising from them (e.g. Tiffany Sports Bar) under the following conditions:
- The non-alcoholic element (e.g. food) must be emphasized in the ad.
- Call-to-action must not involve alcohol; it must focus on another aspect of the business (e.g. food or an event).
- Alcohol may be mentioned but not highlighted.
- No drink specials can be advertised.
