While most Tommies were spending their J-terms off campus, student athletes kept campus alive with plenty of success in their purple uniforms.

Men’s Hockey

  • The team dominated the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in January, holding an 11-game winning streak, the longest in the nation at the time, before falling 4-3 to Michigan Tech on Jan. 31.
  • Senior forward Lucas Wahlin was named CCHA Forward of the Month, while first-year forward Lucas Van Vliet earned Rookie of the Month honors, marking the first time a Tommie has received the rookie award.
  • Their overall record is now 18-9-3 with a record of 15-5-2 in the CCHA.

Women’s Hockey

  • St. Thomas women’s hockey celebrated a massive victory on Jan. 30, topping St. Cloud State 3-2 in overtime to mark their most wins in a single season since moving to Division I.
  • Junior JuliAnna Gazdick scored the first two goals, and junior Rylee Bartz sealed the deal for the Tommies with the winning goal in overtime. The team’s overall record is now 12-17-1 with a record of 7-16-1 in the WCHA.

Women’s Basketball

  • The women’s basketball team took down Denver in an overtime thriller on Jan. 8 and had solid wins against Omaha and North Dakota later in the month.
  • Their January record was 3-5, placing them at sixth in the Summit League with an overall record of 11-13.

Men’s Basketball

  • The Tommies held their own in Summit League play, starting the month with a high-scoring 92-88 victory over Denver on Jan. 4.
  • The team’s nation-leading 28-game home winning streak came to an end in an 80-81 loss against North Dakota on Jan. 29.
  • The squad was able to bounce back on Feb. 1, as junior Carter Bjerke set a St. Thomas DI-era record by hitting 10 three-pointers in a 99-64 blowout win over Kansas City.

Dance and Cheer

  • Tommie Dance and Cheer traveled to the College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship in Orlando, Florida from Jan. 16-18.
  • The dance team continued their storied success with fifth-place finishes in both the Division I Jazz and Division I Hip-Hop categories.
  • The Tommie Cheer Team finished fifteenth in the All-Girl Division I Game Day category and also placed in the top 20 in the nation for the All-Girl Division I category.

Other

  • Women’s tennis just began their season with a 6-1 road loss to Iowa State.
  • Track and Field set multiple records at the Mark Schuck Open and Multi in Mankato, with Brook Wisdom and Morgan Koppelman tying the program record for pole vault at 3.91 meters. Cassia Cady also broke a program record for triple jump with a jump of 12.06 meters.

The Tommies have laid down a strong foundation as they head into February with the latter halves of the basketball and hockey seasons in full swing.
