Community members have started a GoFundMe page that seeks to raise $45,000 for the family of Seham Hassen, a 22-year-old senior studying public health at St. Thomas who died Monday after a hit-and-run.

Minneapolis Police Department officers responded to a hit-and-run at 3:10 a.m. Sunday on the 1600 block of Marshall St. NE, according to an email from the MPD to The Crest. Police wrote that the victim was identified as a woman in her 20s, who was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. The hospital announced her death Monday, according to the MPD email.

A Janazah funeral service was held for Hassen at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Burnsville Mosque, with a burial service following at 2:30 p.m. at Garden of Eden Cemetery in Burnsville, according to the St. Thomas Newsroom

Hassen participated in the Muslim Student Association and the Public Health Club at St. Thomas, according to the Newsroom. The GoFundMe’s description states that she planned to work in the medical field after graduation “so she could care for others and give back to her community.”

The GoFundMe, which was started Sunday, had raised over $27,000 of its goal, which had been updated from $30,000 to $45,000 as of 10 p.m. on Tuesday. According to its description, “Seham’s family faces funeral costs, lost income, and urgent living expenses after tragedy.”

The driver involved in the hit-and-run did not stop, according to the MPD email. Police said no arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon.

Police wrote that anyone with information about the case should email policetips@minneapolis.gov or call 612-673-5845.
