First-year Survival Guide: Everything you need to know about fall sports

(Madelyn Gallagher/The Crest)

St. Thomas sports games are a great way to spend time with friends and support fellow Tommies outside of class without breaking the bank. Whether it’s catching a basketball or hockey game in the new Lee and Penny Anderson Arena or walking to South Field for softball, UST students can attend any home game for free.

Getting tickets

Students only need a ticket to attend home football, volleyball, hockey and basketball games. All UST students have access to free student tickets on the Tommie Sports website ticket page.

Student tickets can be claimed the Monday prior to each event at 10 a.m. and downloaded to a cell phone. UST teams that play in the fall and their recent results are listed below.

Football

UST football finished with a 7-5 record last year, going 3-2 at home. Football will kick off its 2026 season against Winona State on Aug. 27 on campus at O’Shaughnessy Stadium.

Graduate receiver JaShawn Todd returns a punt against Butler on Oct. 4, 2025. Todd owns a PFL-best 77-yard punt return this season (Evan Neubauer/The Crest).

A key home game to attend this coming season will be against Pioneer League opponent San Diego on Sept. 26. San Diego beat the Tommies 30-27 last season, coming back from UST’s 17-3 halftime lead.

Another key game to watch will be against Butler, another conference opponent, on Nov. 7. Last season, the Bulldogs beat the Tommies 21-14 in an overtime battle for UST’s 2025 homecoming game.

This season, the game will be played at Butler, but St. Thomas students can watch the game on a streaming service, which will be announced by St. Thomas Athletics closer to the game. The majority of Tommie football games can be watched on Midco Sports Plus.

Volleyball

Tommie volleyball is coming off of one of its best seasons ever after winning the Summit League Tournament and making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in its first year of postseason eligibility. The team finished with a 21-10 overall record, losing to Iowa State in the first round of the 2025 national tournament.

Outside hitter and 2025 Summit League Freshman of the Year Anya Schmidt is a key player to watch for Tommie volleyball this coming season. Last season, Schmidt notched 16 double-digit kill matches and five matches with 10 or more digs.

Two-time Summit League Setter of the Year Morgan Kealy will also be returning to the roster after averaging 10.08 assists per game in 2025, a program record.

Soccer

Both the women’s and men’s soccer teams play in the fall on South Field behind the Lee and Penny Anderson Arena. Last year, the women’s team finished with a record of 3-9-4, and the men finished 7-5-5.

The men’s team will open their conference games on Oct. 3 against Kansas City at South Field. Last season, the Roos beat the Tommies 3-1.

Next season, Gretta Macdonald will be the new head coach of the women’s team. Macdonald coached at St. Cloud State for 12 seasons prior to coming to St. Thomas.

Cross Country

Last fall, Tommie cross country competed in its first NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by Oklahoma State, in its first season of postseason eligibility. The men’s team placed No. 22 out of 30 teams, and the women placed No. 23 out of 32 at the regional.

Both the men’s and women’s teams finished fifth overall at the Summit League Championships last season.

Hockey

The UST women’s and men’s hockey seasons will kick off in late fall. Both teams play in the new Anderson Arena. The men’s team already has its calendar set.

Men’s hockey will start their season against Miami University in Oxford, Ohio on Oct. 30. They will play their first home game against North Dakota on Nov. 13 at the Anderson Arena.

The men’s hockey team is coming off of a 21-12-5 season, losing 4-1 to Minnesota State in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Championship. This coming season, UST will begin playing in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference as a full-time member.

The women’s team finished 7-20-1 in their conference play last season, seventh in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The team ended their 2025-26 season after losing to Ohio State in the WCHA quarterfinals.

Basketball

The men’s basketball team finished the 2025-26 season with a 24-10 overall record, winning 14 of its 15 home games in the Anderson Arena’s inaugural season. Some highlights in the new arena included the revived Tommie-Johnnie rivalry game, jersey giveaways and packed student sections. The men’s team ended their season after a loss to North Dakota in the Summit League Championship semifinal.

The women’s team finished with a 16-16 overall record, losing in the second round of the Summit League Championship. This will be the women’s first season with new head coach Mandy Pearson after longtime coach Ruth Sinn’s retirement.

Bottom line

A Tommie sports team is playing nearly every day, which can be overwhelming for many students who want to attend games. Reference this list of teams that play in the fall to figure out who you want to support and how to find a free ticket.
